Visitors of Philadelphia have recently ranked Philly as the #1 Cultural City in the U.S. on Travel and Leisure's Website. Philadelphia beat out Washington D.C. and New York City for the top spot, though by a narrow margin, in the category of culture. Although the results aren't scientific in nature, the poll accurately depicts how Philadelphia has really developed into a culturally diverse city with variety in the music, performing arts and fine arts Philadelphia has to offer.
There are four sub-categories that make up the Culture category: Classical Music (in which Philly ranked #2), Historical sites and monuments (#1), Museum and Galleries (#5) and Theater and Performance Arts (#5).
There is no doubt that this ranking has been aided by the numerous organizations that have shaped the cultural undertones of Philadelphia. Among those organizations, Design Philadelphia, which ran from October 13th-23rd, is one of the biggest design festivals in the country and lets visitors and residents experience Philadelphia's creative industries through open studios, lectures, street happenings, exhibitions and public installations.
Other cultural organizations such as Live Arts Fest and Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the Popped Music Festival, and the Philadelphia Film Festival have helped make Philadelphia a cultural hub for both visitors and residents alike.
