Remember when the City of Philadelphia came out and promised free, cheap, wireless internet? Well, Philly Socialists are working to establish a wireless corridor in Port Richmond, trying to actually implement the wireless initiative that the City was never able to start.
Anthony, from Philly Socialists, is the man in charge of the wireless project that has already installed two nodes in Port Richmond. The main reason behind starting the project is simple. "The ability to communicate with loved ones is a right" Anthony boldly stated. He continued to explain that it is not financially feasible for the City to create a entirely wireless city. But in Anthony's words, "We aren't going to wait around for someone else to do something about it."
Although the initiative has been successful so far, there could be some kinks waiting in the future. "It is not a question of technically doing it, we are already doing it. It is a question of legality. It has not been a problem because we aren't big enough," Anthony explained. Unfortunately, corporate internet providers are also realizing the new market for lower income households, charging a minimum for lower quality service. But if the ability to contact loved ones is a right, shouldn't it be free?? Philly Socialists think so!
Currently, 50-100 people are in range of the wireless nodes and there are plans in the spring to install more along Lehigh Ave. "We intend to build a community around something we can all share," Anthony insisted.
Anthony envisions the project expanding to collecting donated smart phones, computers and other hardware to create a center for residents to use. "With phones calls that can be made over the internet, it is possible for immigrants to contact loved ones in their home country," Anthony stated.
Being connected with your neighbors and you community is an essential part of living in an informed community. With access to free wireless internet, the Philly Socialists are making it happen for the public good.
